What are healthy boundaries?

 

Boundaries play a crucial role in our well-being, yet many of us struggle to establish and maintain them. We find ourselves bending over backwards to please others, saying “yes” when we really mean “no,” and feeling drained and resentful as a result. But it doesn’t have to be this way.
From my extensive experience working with clients, I have had the privilege of witnessing remarkable transformations unfold when individuals consciously choose to install healthy boundaries in their lives. It is truly awe-inspiring to see how their newfound commitment to self-care and assertiveness ripples outward, shaping their interactions and relationships. As they set clear boundaries and communicate their needs with confidence, a remarkable shift occurs. Others begin to recognise and respect their boundaries, acknowledging their worth and valuing their presence. These individuals are no longer overlooked or taken for granted; instead, they are seen and heard in ways they never thought possible. It is a testament to the profound impact that healthy boundaries can have on every aspect of our lives, empowering us to create a life filled with authentic connections, mutual respect, and a deep sense of fulfillment.

 

So how do you install healthy boundaries?

Installing healthy boundaries is not an overnight endeavour but rather a deliberate and empowering process that requires understanding, reflection, and action. Below, I will guide you through the essential steps involved in installing healthy boundaries, empowering you to navigate this transformative journey with clarity and confidence.

 

1.Become aware of who oversteps your boundaries and how they make you feel in your body

 

Take the time to observe and identify the individuals in your life who consistently overstep your boundaries. Notice the specific situations or behaviours that trigger discomfort or unease within you. Pay attention to the physical sensations that arise when your boundaries are crossed. Is it a tightening in your chest, a pit in your stomach, or a sense of tension? By becoming aware of these cues, you can start recognising when your boundaries are being violated and take proactive steps to address the situation.
When I was getting started on my journey with healthy boundaries (which went hand in hand with discovering I was an empath), I started to notice that when I saw a particular friend I would feel really drained for about 4 days afterwards. I’d feel a pain in my solar plexus, and feel heightened anxiety and depression. My internal dialogue would be particularly negative. Once I realised it was coming up when I saw this person – and I noticed it happened every time I saw them, it became a necessity to put boundaries in with them, ie. not seeing them anymore.

 

2.Understand why you allow them to overstep your boundaries:

 

Delve deeper into the reasons behind why you have allowed others to overstep your boundaries. Reflect on your upbringing, past experiences, and conditioning that may have shaped your perception of boundaries. Explore any underlying fears, insecurities, or people-pleasing tendencies that may have contributed to this pattern. Understanding the root causes will help you gain clarity and compassion for yourself, paving the way for transformative change.
I had a client who had poor boundaries and people pleased because her mother had made her do all sorts of things that went against her true desires as a child. In order to cope with this she had learned to numb herself from her true feelings, and to seek approval, she did lots of people pleasing. The underlying belief was: my feelings don’t matter and I need to put this other person’s needs before my own in order to receive love and feel safe.

 

3.Rewire the subconscious beliefs/programs that made you have these weak boundaries

 

Uncover and rewire the subconscious beliefs or programming that have contributed to your weak boundaries. Engage in self-reflection and introspection to identify any negative or limiting beliefs you hold about yourself, worthiness, or asserting boundaries. Once identified, challenge these beliefs and replace them with empowering and affirming statements. Utilise techniques such as positive affirmations, visualisation, and hypnotherapy to reinforce new, healthy beliefs that support strong boundaries.

 

4.Have energy work done to remove the energetic boundary blocks

 

Incorporate energy work into your journey of installing healthy boundaries. Seek the assistance of energy healing modalities, such as Reiki or acupuncture, to release energetic blocks that may be hindering your ability to establish and maintain strong boundaries. These practices can help clear stagnant energy, restore balance, and support the free flow of energy within your system, empowering you to create and uphold healthy boundaries.

 

5.Visualise yourself with very healthy strong boundaries 

 

Harness the power of visualisation to manifest and reinforce healthy, strong boundaries. Spend dedicated time envisioning yourself confidently setting and upholding boundaries in various situations. See yourself speaking assertively, respecting your own needs, and honoring your limits. Visualise the positive outcomes and the sense of empowerment that comes from having healthy boundaries. By repeatedly visualising this version of yourself, you create a mental blueprint that aligns your thoughts and actions with the reality you desire.

 

6.Learn new communication techniques and behaviours to break unhealthy boundary patterns

 

Equip yourself with new communication techniques and behaviours that support healthy boundaries. Develop assertiveness skills to express your needs, set limits, and say “no” when necessary. Practice active listening and effective communication, which involves expressing yourself clearly while also actively listening and understanding the perspectives of others.

Implement healthy boundary-setting strategies such as using “I” statements, setting realistic expectations, and negotiating compromises when needed. Learning and implementing these new communication techniques and behaviors will empower you to break free from unhealthy boundary patterns and foster healthier relationships.
